I was setting up a laptop for a friend of mine and followed the guide at Gentoo's website. and found that I needed to run:
/etc/init.d/hald start
rc-update add hald
What happened if I didn't do it. The X would start but Cont + Alt + backspace wouldn't do anything and there would be no mouse use.
This let the computers be able to start the X server.
I also had to install nvidia from the website.
